Rugby Deanery Synod Minutes 22 September 2011

Minutes of Rugby Deanery Synod
Thursday 22 September 2011, 7.30pm, Long Lawford
 
 
1.                  Everyone was welcomed by the Area Dean and an attendance list was circulated. The   
opening worship was led by Rev. Paul Wilkinson.
 
2.         Elections to the Deanery Standing & Pastoral Committee
            - One nomination for Lay Chair received: Kevin Downham duly elected
            - Deanery Standing & Pastoral Committee
                        Two laity nominations received: Roger Evans & Mel Foster – duly elected.
Three clergy nominations received: Jane Close, Barbara Clutton & Mark Beach – duly elected.
The Area Dean asked for any suggestions for the 2 lay vacancies and the 1 clergy vacancy should be made to him for consideration at the first meeting of the committee.
 
3.         Minutes of the meeting of 6 June 2011 were agreed and there were no and matters arising.
 
4.         Area Dean’s Notices – the AD announced the event “Three Dimensions of Healing” being led by the Bishop of Warwick on 5 October and encouraged people to attend.
 
5.         Deanery Priorities
·         Mission 2012 update given by John Parker – awaiting approval by +Christopher.
·         Deanery 20-30s Outreach update given by Tim Norman & Matt Caldicott. A very positive report was given and it was explained the Deanery contribution of
£2,000 pa would be collected through the Parish Share system.
 
6.         To confirm Deanery Share Offer for 2012 – the deanery contribution to support other deaneries of £73,929 was confirmed unanimously by the meeting.
 
7.         Refreshments were served and gratefully received.
 
8.         Consecration of Women as Bishops – there was a good natured and wide ranging discussion of the proposals coming to Diocesan Synod on 5 November. This was followed by a series of votes as follows:
 
The Motion Diocesan Synod will vote on:
“That this Synod approves the proposals embodied in the draft Bishops and Priests (Consecration and Ordination of Women) Measure and in draft Amending Canon No.30.”
For: 20   Against: 10   Abstain: 2
 
Diocesan Suggested Questions
1. Are you in favour of admitting women to the episcopate in the Church of England?
Yes: 29 No: 2 Abstain: 4
 
2. Do you think that any special provision should be made for those who cannot on conscience grounds accept that development?
Yes: 28 No: 5 Abstain: 2
 
3. If you think that special provision should be made, do you think that the provision as suggested in the Measure is the right way to do it?
Yes: 3 No: 21 Abstain: 4
Following Motion to be proposed at Diocesan Synod
This synod:
  • desires that all faithful Anglicans remain and thrive together in the Church of England; and therefore
  • calls upon the House of Bishops to bring forward amendments to the draft Bishops and Priests (Consecration and Ordination of Women) Measure to ensure that those unable on theological grounds to accept the ministry of women bishops are able to receive episcopal oversight from a bishop with authority (i.e. ordinary jurisdiction) conferred by the Measure rather than by delegation from a Diocesan Bishop.
For: 22 Against: 2 Abstain: 10
